Pornography On Trial

Pornography On Trial
Groups battling pornography must demonstrate that the products they seek to ban are truly obscene and not legitimately protected by the First Amendment--a requirement that often leads to public debate and controversy. Author Thomas C. Mackey thoroughly examines the problems and issues in public policymaking, legal precedents, and the people behind them. After a brief historical background, "Pornography on Trial" surveys and analyzes the leading issues and case law on obscenity from l957 to the present. Half the book consists of documents--judicial opinions--from key cases. There are biographical sketches of key people, laws, and concepts from Judge Learned Hand and the "Hicklin" test to Chief Justice Sir Alexander James Edmund Cockburn's judicial definition of obscenity from l868. The book also includes a chronology, a table of cases, and an annotated bibliography.

On pornography

On pornography
The policing of pornography remains a subject of widespread controversy. On Pornography provides a history of this policing and an understanding of the current debate. The authors show that obscenity law should not be understood negatively as censorship but as part of the positive administration of a particular practice of sexuality. This book indicates that obscenity law is not, as liberals claim, a mistaken attempt to police moral ideas, but rather forms part of the legitimate governmental regulation of a problematic social conduct.

GAY PORNOGRAPHY

GAY PORNOGRAPHY
Gay pornography online and onscreen is a controversial and significantly under-researched area of cultural production. In the first book of its kind Gay Pornography: Representations of Sexuality and Masculinity explores the iconography themes and ideals that the genre presents. Indeed John Mercer argues that gay pornography cannot be regarded as one-dimensional but that it offers its audience a vision of plural masculinities that are more nuanced and ambiguous than they might seem. Mercer examines how the internet has generated an exponential growth in the sheer volume and variety of this material and facilitated far greater access to it. He uses both professional and amateur examples to explore how gay pornography has become part of a wider cultural context in which modern masculinities have become 'saturated' by their constantly evolving status and function in popular culture.

The Frail Social Body : Pornography, Homosexuality, and Other Fantasies in Interwar France

The Frail Social Body : Pornography, Homosexuality, and Other Fantasies in Interwar France
Amid the national shame and subjugation following World War I in France, cultural critics therejournalists, novelists, doctors, and legislators, among othersworked to rehabilitate what was perceived as an unhealthy social body. Carolyn J. Dean shows how these critics attempted to reconstruct the bodily integrity” of the nation by pointing to the dangers of homosexuality and pornography. Dean's provocative work demonstrates the importance of this concept of bodily integrity in France and shows how it was ultimately used to define first-class citizenship.

Dean presents fresh historical materialincluding novels and medical treatisesto show how fantasies about the body-violating qualities of homosexuality and pornography informed social perceptions and political action. Although she focuses on the period from 1890 to 1945, Dean also establishes the relevance of these ideas to current preoccupations with pornography and sexuality in the United States.
